Cancer Screening Dogs for Early Detection

Are you concerned you may have cancer?

Who We Are?

With over ten years of experience in dog training, we realize that we can help save lives. People will have a better chance of surviving if they can detect cancer at an early stage. And our dogs can do that.

Why We Do This?

Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths (American Cancer Society). There are no accurate screening methods for the early detection of most types of cancer.

Why Use Dogs to Sniff & Detect Cancer?

A dog has a powerful nose containing 300 million sensors, while a human nose has only 5 million. Dogs also have a second advantage, a second smelling device in the backs of their noses, called Jacobson’s organ. The dual smelling systems allow trained dogs to detect  cancer’s unique odors, called volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

The Helsinki University researched why dogs can smell cancer. All the tumors have a specific, unique scent or VOC because of the so-called “cancer molecule.”

With training, our dogs can recognize this scent. They can perform screening and decide by analyzing the patient´s scent sample, whether there is or isn´t a tumor in the body.

I absolutely believe that [dogs] can detect cancer.” Cynthia M. Otto, DVM, Ph.D., director of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) Working Dog Center

She kept staring at me and lunging at my chest. It led me to find a lump.” Claire Guest, CEO, Medical Detection Dogs, telling CNN how her dog caught her breast cancer ear.
